The Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure is not designed to produce world class athletes. If you are interested in taking the Diploma you do not necessarily have to be an active participant, but should have an interest in the industry, and be able to understand and relate to leading an active and healthy lifestyle. The sport and leisure industry spans a huge range of job roles. There are opportunities to specialise in areas of sport, including competitive sport but also other interests: walking, climbing or adventure, in fitness, in playwork, stadium management and safety, roles based in the outdoors, sport surfaces and many more. The scope ranges from groundsman or stadium manager to coach or personal trainer - there are over 200 job roles within the sport and leisure industry. The Higher Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure includes generic content to establish a range of skills, knowledge and understanding around related industries. It requires a more technical understanding and may focus on different business functions. If you are keen to get involved in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry or simply enjoy learning in a hands-on way, then the Diploma could be for you.

What will you study on the Course? (Principal Learning, skills, project)

The Diploma will incorporate Principal Learning based on developing the skills and knowledge of the sport and active leisure industry and generic learning based on English, Maths and ICT. The key
themes that will be covered within the Principal Learning are:

• Looking at behaviours and choices that influence participation.
• Learning the basic principals of anatomy and physiology and their application in the industry.
• Investigating the mechanics of movement.
• Identifying the impact of technological innovation.
• Establishing why the industry structure varies from place to place.

Through the Additional Specialist Learning component of the course you will also be able to study other level 2 qualifications alongside the Diploma.

Work Experience

Work experience is another exciting element of the Diploma and will involve a minimum of 10 days work experience in an organisation that best suits your individual interests. Employers will also be extensively involved in providing real-life case studies, careers events, mentoring, interview practice and demonstrations.
How will you be taught and assessed?

Theoretical knowledge is backed up by a strong emphasis on learning by doing. Through your work placement you will be able to learn how to think for yourself, problem solve, communicate, work independently, and work successfully as part of a team. A minimum of 50% of the Principal Learning will focus on ‘learning through doing’. Assessment will be predominantly in the form of coursework assignments and projects allowing you to plan, organise and personalise your own learning. For the Active and Healthy Lifestyle Choices module there will be a written examination consisting of multiple choice and short answer questions.

Career opportunities and progression:

The nature of Diploma learning means that you must be self-motivated and have developed strong intellectual and personal skills, which will make the transition from school to further study or employment much easier. Progression from the Higher level diploma can give you the opportunity to enter employment in roles such as a fitness instructor, caravan park assistant or youth support worker, or apprenticeships in outdoor education, equine, amenity horticulture or other level 3 qualifications. Further education pathways are also available in many areas. If you are successful on the higher Diploma there will be the opportunity to continue at The Qdos Centre to study for an Advanced Diploma.
