Equivalent of 3˝ ‘A’ Levels
Entry Requirements:
· 5 A*-C grades at GCSE or equivalent including English and Maths. Or
· 5 A*-C grades at GCSE or equivalent including Functional Skills at level 2 in English, Maths and IT. Or
· A Higher Diploma (level 2) Or
· A Young Apprenticeship and a C or above in English and Maths GCSE Or
· A Young Apprenticeship and Functional Skills in English, Maths and IT at level 2.
Many students will wish to take level 3 courses at Richard Huish College as part of their additional specialist learning. We are working closely with Richard Huish College to ensure that you will be able to choose from a range of ‘A’ level courses or other opportunities including sporting provision and in order to study at Richard Huish College students will have to meet any of the college’s additional entry requirements.
Duration of Course: two years full time
The Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure will provide you with knowledge and understanding of the sport and active leisure industry.The Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure is not designed to produce world class athletes. If you are interested in taking the Diploma you do not necessarily have to be an active participant, but have an interest in the industry, whilst also being able to understand and relate to leading an active and healthy lifestyle.The sport and leisure industry spans a huge range of job roles. There are opportunities to specialise in areas of sport, including competitive sport but also other interests: walking, climbing or adventure, in fitness, in playwork, stadium management and safety, roles based in the outdoors, sport surfaces and many more. The scope ranges from groundsman or stadium manager to coach or personal trainer - there are over 200 job roles within the sport and leisure industry. The advanced Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure is designed to prepare students for further study and employment at higher levels in the industry. It allows for greater specialisation through the specialist learning element. If you are keen to get involved in the sport and active leisure industry or simply enjoy learning in a hands-on way, then the Diploma could be for you.
What will you study on the Course? (Principal Learning, skills, project)
The Diploma will incorporate Principal Learning based on developing the skills and knowledge of the Sport and Active Leisure Industry and generic learning based on English, Maths and ICT. The key themes that will be covered within The Principal Learning are:
• Exploring the implications of lifestyle choices on society.
• Gaining understanding of the disciplines of anatomy, physiology and biomechanics.
• Technological innovations for the industry.
• Looking at developing technological innovations for the industry
to enhance Performance.
• Evaluating the impact of the industry on the economy and its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product.
• Discussing the ethical considerations and the positive legacy after
major sport and active leisure pursuits.
• Exploring globalisation, sustainability and commercialism in the sector.
• Looking at the implications of equality and diversity legislation.
• Discussing how to deal with all customers’ needs by developing management, leadership and specialist customer skills.
• Looking at the roles of the industry in community cohesion.
Through the Additional Specialist Learning component of the course you will also be able to study another level 3 qualification alongside the Diploma.
Work Experience
Work experience is another exciting element of the Diploma and will involve a minimum of 10 days work experience in an organisation that best suits your individual interests. Employers will also be extensively involved in providing real-life case studies, careers events, mentoring, interview practice and demonstrations.
How will you be taught and assessed?
Theoretical knowledge is backed up by a strong emphasis on learning by doing. Through your work placement you are able to learn how to think for yourself, problem solve, communicate, work independently, and work successfully as part of a team. A minimum of 50% of the Principal Learning will focus on ‘learning through doing’. Assessment will be predominantly in the form of coursework assignments and projects allowing you to plan, organise and personalise your own learning. For the Science & Technology and Globalization in Sport modules there are external examinations made up of short and long answer questions.
Career opportunities and progression:
The nature of Diploma learning means that you must be self-motivated and have developed strong intellectual and personal skills, which will make the transition to Higher Education or employment much easier. Progression from the advanced level could be direct employment opportunities in roles such as a senior play worker, head grounds keeper or gym manager. The advanced level could also lead to roles in a variety of advanced apprenticeships such as sports development, advanced apprenticeship in sporting excellence etc. or entry to Degree level study at University. You will be better informed about the industry and will be able to make more effective choices about undergraduate study, having a clearer focus on the career and the qualifications you need to get there.
